How to Check Your Kidney Health: A Complete Guide
Your kidneys are two fist-sized organs sitting just below your ribcage on either side of your spine. They work silently around the clock, filtering your entire blood supply dozens of times a day, removing waste through urine, balancing your body’s fluids, and keeping your blood pressure in check. Because they rarely cause pain or obvious symptoms until serious damage has occurred, kidney disease is often called the “silent killer.” The good news? Catching problems early through simple checks can make all the difference.
Step 1: Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You
Before any test or doctor visit, your own body can give you clues. These aren’t definitive diagnoses, but they are signals worth paying attention to:
- Puffy eyes, swollen ankles or feet — When kidneys are struggling, they can’t remove excess fluid properly. That fluid builds up in tissues, causing visible swelling. Morning puffiness around the eyes is a particularly common early sign.
- Foamy or bubbly urine — Healthy kidneys keep protein inside your blood where it belongs. Damaged kidneys let protein leak out into your urine. When you see persistent foam in the toilet bowl (like the froth on a shaken bottle of water), that’s protein escaping and a sign something may be wrong.
- Changes in how often you urinate — Going to the bathroom more frequently at night than usual, passing very little urine, or noticing your urine is dark, reddish, or rust-colored are all warning signs worth noting.
- Constant fatigue — When kidneys can’t filter waste efficiently, those toxins accumulate in your blood. This makes you feel persistently tired, foggy, and drained even after a full night’s sleep.
- Itchy or dry skin — This happens when waste products that should be flushed out by the kidneys build up in the bloodstream instead, irritating the skin from the inside.
- Shortness of breath without exertion — Failing kidneys can allow fluid to accumulate around the lungs, making breathing harder. They also produce less of a hormone called EPO, which signals the body to make red blood cells. Fewer red blood cells means less oxygen delivered to your body, causing breathlessness and anemia.

Step 2: Get a Blood Test — The Most Reliable Check

Serum Creatinine — Creatinine is a harmless waste product naturally produced by your muscles during everyday activity. Healthy kidneys filter it out of the blood and expel it through urine. When kidneys aren’t working well, creatinine starts piling up in the blood. A normal creatinine level is roughly 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL for women. Numbers above these ranges suggest the kidneys are under strain.
eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) — This might sound intimidating, but it’s simply a score that tells you how efficiently your kidneys are filtering your blood per minute. Think of it like a performance percentage for your kidneys. A score above 90 is normal. Between 60 and 89 is mildly reduced and worth monitoring. Below 60, especially if it stays there for three months or more, indicates Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), meaning ongoing kidney damage that needs medical management.
BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) — Urea is another waste product, formed when your body breaks down protein from food. Like creatinine, healthy kidneys remove it from the blood. When BUN levels rise (normal range is roughly 7 to 20 mg/dL), it means the kidneys are struggling to clear waste. Doctors usually look at BUN alongside creatinine for a fuller picture.
What to ask your doctor: Request a “Kidney Function Test” or “Renal Function Panel” at any diagnostic lab. No special preparation is needed beyond occasional fasting instructions your lab will specify.
Step 3: Get a Urine Test — What Comes Out Is Just as Important
Alongside blood tests, examining your urine is equally powerful. This requires simply collecting a small urine sample in a cup at the lab, completely painless and quick.
Urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (uACR) — Albumin is a protein in your blood. Healthy kidneys block protein from entering urine. This test measures exactly how much albumin is leaking into your urine. A result below 30 mg/g is normal. Between 30 and 300 is a warning zone called microalbuminuria. Above 300 is a serious red flag called macroalbuminuria. This is one of the earliest detectable signs of kidney damage, often appearing years before other symptoms.
Urinalysis (Routine Urine Test) — This is a broad urine examination that checks for blood cells, protein, glucose, infection signs, and the concentration of your urine. Blood in the urine (called hematuria) that you can’t see with the naked eye can be picked up here, pointing to kidney disease, stones, or infections. Your urine’s concentration level also tells doctors whether your kidneys are properly regulating fluid balance.
What to ask your doctor or lab: Request a “Urine Routine Examination” and a “Spot Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio.” Both are inexpensive, widely available tests.
Step 4: Monitor These Numbers at Home
You don’t need a lab for everything. Two simple home devices can tell you a great deal about your kidney health on a daily basis:
A Blood Pressure Monitor — High blood pressure (hypertension) is both a leading cause of kidney disease and a consequence of it, creating a dangerous cycle. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Readings consistently above 130/80 are a warning sign that both your heart and kidneys need attention. Home blood pressure monitors are affordable (available at any pharmacy), easy to use, and take only seconds. Check it every morning, ideally before eating or exercise.
A Blood Glucose Monitor — Diabetes is the single biggest cause of kidney failure worldwide. When blood sugar stays high over time, it slowly damages the tiny filtering units inside the kidneys. A fasting blood glucose below 100 mg/dL is normal. Between 100 and 125 is prediabetes. Above 126 is diabetes. If you haven’t been diagnosed but have risk factors like obesity or a family history, checking your blood sugar regularly is one of the most protective things you can do for your kidneys.
Urine Dipstick Tests — These are inexpensive strips available at pharmacies that you simply dip into a urine sample at home. Within seconds, colour changes on the strip indicate the presence of protein, blood, glucose, or infection markers. They’re not as precise as lab tests, but they’re a useful monthly self-check between doctor visits.
Step 5: Get an Ultrasound If Needed
If your blood or urine tests raise concerns, your doctor will likely recommend a kidney ultrasound. This is a completely painless imaging scan — a technician applies a small handheld device (called a probe) to your abdomen with some gel, and sound waves create a live image of your kidneys on a screen. No needles, no radiation.
An ultrasound can reveal whether your kidneys are the right size and shape, and detect cysts (fluid-filled sacs), kidney stones, blockages, or tumours. It takes about 15–20 minutes and results are usually available the same day.
Your kidneys ask very little of you — they simply do their job, quietly and tirelessly. The least you can do is check in on them once in a while.
