Imagine your body as a massive, perfectly organised city. Billions of workers (your cells) show up every day, do their jobs, retire when it’s time, and get replaced by fresh recruits. The system runs like clockwork.

The Biology Behind the Rebellion
Every cell in your body carries a complete instruction manual: your DNA. Inside that manual are two critical types of workers. Proto-oncogenes are the gas pedal; they tell cells to grow. Tumour suppressor genes are the brake; they tell cells to stop.

This process is called metastasis, and it’s what makes cancer life-threatening.
Why Do Cells Mutate in the First Place?
Mutations are surprisingly common. Your body makes around 3.8 million new cells every second, and copying errors happen. Most are caught and corrected by built-in repair systems. Cancer occurs when too many mutations stack up, or when the repair system itself gets damaged.
Several factors accelerate this damage:
Carcinogens like tobacco smoke, UV radiation, and certain chemicals directly damage DNA. Chronic inflammation from conditions like obesity, PCOS, or long-term infections creates an environment where cells are more likely to mutate. Viruses like HPV and Hepatitis B are directly linked to cervical and liver cancers respectively. Genetics also play a role; some people inherit faulty tumour suppressor genes (like BRCA1 in breast cancer) that give mutations a head start.
Is Cancer One Disease or Many?
This is where it gets fascinating. Cancer is not one disease. It is over 100 different diseases, each defined by where it starts and which cells are involved. Breast cancer behaves completely differently from lung cancer, even though both involve uncontrolled cell growth.
In India, the most commonly diagnosed cancers include oral cancer (strongly linked to tobacco and pan masala use), breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer. India also carries one of the world’s highest burdens of tobacco-related cancers, a public health crisis hiding in plain sight.
The Body’s First Line of Defence
Here’s the part most people don’t know: your immune system kills cancer cells every single day. Natural Killer (NK) cells patrol the body, identify abnormal cells, and destroy them before they can form tumours. Cancer only wins when it outsmarts this surveillance, which is exactly what modern immunotherapy treatments are now designed to reverse.
The Bottom Line
Cancer is your own biology glitching. Cells that forgot how to follow the rules. But understanding it removes the fear of the unknown. The earlier it’s detected, the more treatable it becomes. Regular screenings, a low-inflammation diet, avoiding tobacco, managing stress, and knowing your family history are your real shields.
